The Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), in collaboration with the Latin American Centre for Development Administration (CLAD), presents the publication ‘Artificial intelligence and public policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Experiences and contributions toward shaping a regional roadmap.’ The book by expert Maximiliano Campos Ríos is intended as a reference tool for public policy makers, diplomats, academics and development stakeholders involved in the modernisation of state management in the region.

The publication was presented on Thursday, 4 September, at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Maximiliano Campos expressed his gratitude to those present and to the institutions for an event that he described as “much more than a simple publication (…) this is a space for dialogue about the future of the region.”

The author holds a PhD in public administration from the UBA and a master’s degree in administration and public policy and is an international consultant with over 20 years of experience in state modernisation. He currently works as a professor, researcher, and director of the master’s programme in public administration at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the UBA.

Based on his experience, Maximiliano Campos Ríos argues in this book that artificial intelligence represents an opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean to overcome historical structural limitations and make public management more efficient. The aim of the publication is to analyse this intersection and foster constructive dialogue that promotes regional cooperation for the inclusive and sustainable implementation of these technologies.

Throughout its 10 chapters, the work, available in Spanish, English and Portuguese, offers a comprehensive analysis of topics such as the importance of digital infrastructure, building citizenship through AI, the governance and regulation of algorithms, and strategies for designing public policies tailored to the region.

The book ‘Artificial intelligence and public policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Experiences and contributions toward shaping a regional roadmap’ represents a concrete contribution by SELA to its Member States, as part of its work programme and its commitment to offering a tool that contributes to the construction of a common roadmap for digital transformation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
