Within the framework of the “XXXII Meeting of Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean: Strengthening capacities for the measurement, assessment and evaluation of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (CSSyT)”,the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) formalized the renewal of the commitment to continue collaborating jointly, in line with the regional implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, in order to continue strengthening regional action on disaster reduction as a key element to positively contribute to sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Through an exchange of letters of commitment, the Permanent Secretary of SELA, Ambassador Clarems Endara, and the Head of the Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean of the UNDRR, Nahuel Arenas, ratified their willingness for mutual cooperation and commitment to strategic initiatives to strengthen joint work for the benefit of the region, based on the objectives established and results obtained since the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2011 and endorsed by both entities in December 2015.
Among the strategies proposed are the review of the progress in the implementation of the Regional Action Plan (RAP); the development of public-private partnerships to build resilience to disasters; the implementation of initiatives in governmental, financial, national and international entities in the area of comprehensive management and reduction of natural disasters and infrastructure; and the promotion of mechanisms and instances of South-South and Triangular Cooperation to strengthen regional action.
The commitment signed refers to resolution A/79/L.14, issued on 18 November 2024, which establishes a cooperation mechanism between the UN and SELA, during the 39th Plenary Session of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations.
The renewal of the commitment for Disaster Risk Reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean, between SELA and UNDRR, is part of SELA’s Work Program, specifically in the Social Development Area, to contribute to the improvement of social development indicators in the region in a sustainable, sustainable and resilient manner.
