The Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) presents the book Integration within integration – New paths for synergy in the region, which highlights the importance of maintaining a culture of sustained cooperation in order to achieve more equitable and

sustainable development that is capable of responding to the major common challenges facing the region.

In an international scenario characterized by profound transformations and growing social, economic, and environmental demands, regional integration has become an indispensable tool for strengthening the capacity for joint action among States. In this context, the publication highlights the progress and achievements made through inter-secretariat work, one of which is the Regional Convergence Matrix (MCR). This tool is designed to identify points of convergence among the agendas of integration mechanisms, with the aim of avoiding duplication of efforts and facilitating the formulation of regional public policies.

Inter-secretariat work is organised around five broad thematic areas that address issues crucial to regional integration: productive chains, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, cross-border cooperation and infrastructure, electricity interconnection and sustainable energy, and food security. These themes are key for the countries of the region, as they are linked to strategic objectives that seek to strengthen cooperation among countries, improve infrastructure and productive capacities, and ensure sustainable development.

The book also takes a critical look at the difficulties that have arisen on the path towards smoother cooperation, such as regulatory differences among countries, disparities in resources, and the need to reconcile national interests with regional objectives. However, these obstacles have provided lessons learned that have strengthened communication, coordination, and flexibility in integration processes.

With Integration within integration – New paths for synergy in the region, SELA offers a vision of the future based on a culture of sustained cooperation involving governments, regional organisations, the private sector, civil society and international organisations. In this way, it is possible to achieve a more integrated, competitive region with greater opportunities for all its inhabitants.
